Domaine de la Pinsonnière
A Brief History …
For more than 16 centuries, the Vouvrillon vineyard developed harmoniously to the east of the city of Tours, on the right bank of the River Loire and the slopes of the countryside’s valleys.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the monks of Marmoutier Abbey, founded by St. Martin, actively worked to develop the vineyard, and the wines of Vouvray took pride of place at the King’s table.
The Domaine de la Pinsonnière is a family holding with 18 hectares of vines, situated in the communities of Parçay-Meslay and Rochecorbon. The estate can boast of possessing several parcels of land in the Premières Côtes de Rochecorbon, which are: La Lanterne, St. Georges and Sens.
The Première Côtes elevations permit the production of still wines which are dry, medium dry or sweet, depending on the year, and above all on the amount of sunshine. Still Vouvray always retains the sweet-scented aroma of its terroir. Very charming in the first blush of youth, it acquires very rich aromas in maturing. It doesn’t “age”; it “matures” at the heart of vaults carved in the rock. It is a “vin de longue garde”, a wine for long aging, and vintages from its very greatest years may reach a vigorous century in age. When autumn is favourable, the grape harvest must be delayed until the grapes reach over-maturity; they are then picked in successive selections. This over-aging produces sweet wines that are amber in their youth, and later tinged with gold.
The sweet wines are a delightful accompaniment to foie gras, while the dry and medium dry go well with fish or prepared meats.
« And fruit became nectar »
Vouvray has a natural tendency to become effervescent. This predisposition to “bubbliness” is used to develop effervescent wines, following the traditional method. They are produced from the same varietal as still Vouvray, or Vouvray Tranquille: the grape variety called Chenin or Pineau de la Loire.
These wines are light, full of spirit, and faithful to the authentic character of the region. They are ideal for pre-dinner drinks, as companions to dessert, and for happy moments shared among friends.
Wines from the Domaine de la Pinsonnière are often presented in tasting competitions. They consistently distinguish themselves in the Mâcon tasting competition for vintage French wines, where they have received awards every year since 1982.
In addition, at its very first appearance, the Domaine de la Pinsonnière was represented in the 1999 Hachette Guide to French Wines with a Vouvray Moelleux 1996, which had received a silver medal in the Mâcon competition.
With an incomparable range and the closest attention to our production, we remain faithful to the motto of the Vouvray appellation:
« The heart rejoices. »
